As in most of the smaller Latino nations Chile shares a similar story with countries like Peru and Mexico. Are there Afrolatinos in Chile?
For the documentary, the Afrolatinos team aims to show that there is an Afro influence in the culture of Chile. The team will investigate the history and contributions of the enslaved African. They will look at their music, religion, dance and art. Recognizing that Chile has a larger mestizo population we wanted to include smaller countries with African presence.
The team will confirm the theory that “According to the historian Francisco Antonio Encina, that thirteen percent of the "explorers" to Diego de Almagro who discovered Chile were Blacks.” They will cover history, the ladino in Chile, when and how the first slaves arrived. Understanding that there were two entry points into the country. The first started in the Iberian Peninsula, and the second was through Argentina.
The crew will learn more about the battle of 1817, when the Liberation Army arrived with an army of African and Creole military.
The team will visit Arica, a city in Chile that was founded in 1570 (originally belonging to Peru) that was entirely black. As well as visit other Afro towns: Lumbanga, Pica, Matilla, and La Banda.
What is the Afro influence found in Chile's culture?
The producers will explore the African presence in Chile’s music. They will listen to the cueca, formerly called "zamacueca" which they are told has a strong African element and learn more about the different dance forms found in Chile such as the candombito and Cachimba.
The team also hopes to learn more about famous Afro-Chileans like athlete, Emilio Ulloa, champion of the Pan American Athletics.
What are the social issues? How are Afro-Chilean’s treated today? The team will dig for this answer. Investigating what the social issues are that affect the Afro-Chilean community.
Slavery was abolished in Chile in 1825.
