What was the Afro-Uruguayans role in the history of Uruguay? What if any were the slave revolts in Uruguay?
The producers of Afro-Latinos plan on visiting Uruguay in search of the Afro presence.
The crew will visit Montevideo and Las Piedras where there is a large population of Afro-Uruguayans.
The team will learn more about the past relationship between Argentina, Brazil and Uruguay and the significance of the River Plate.
The River Plate was once a very important entry point for the enslaved African that arrived to these three countries.
What was The Battle of Las Piedras and what was the Afro-Uruguayans role in fighting for Independence?
What are the contributions of Afro-Uruguayans to their country’s economy, society and culture?
The team will search for the Afro influence in Uruguay’s music, dance, literature, religion, and art.
They will listen to Candombe, a musical form that has its origins in Africa. The crew is excited to attend a traditional (cuerdas) in Uruguay. A cuerda is very much like a (parranda)… a celebration where people gather and play music up and down the streets. They will learn about the Milonga a dance form of Uruguay, which has its roots in tango.
They will also look at the works of Eduardo Galeano, an Uruguayan writer, who is NOT of Afro descent, who believes it is important to write about history and credits the contributions of blacks in building his nation.
The producers will look at the social issues that affect the Afro-Uruguayan community.
